Closet reno: the after!

>> February 3, 2010

Thanks for checking on the closet project!  I figured I would make you sweat in anticipation for how the project came out.  If you you are not caught up, I mentioned Friday that I wanted to renovate my closet this past weekend.  Then yesterday I talked a bit about the process we went through - it's not easy when you have a lot of clothes to think about!

So here's how it all turned out!

So here's what we did:  We installed five horizontal shelves in the middle of the closet.

This was more efficient for the space.  Although the shelves are the same depth as the prior loooong shelf, because I don't have hangers (sticking out an additional 7-8 inches), it actually feels like a deeper closet.  These shelves now store all my sweaters, jeans, and bags.  The bottom shelf holds boxes from Ikea for things like swim suits, scarves, pajamas....and my pair of Lacriox.

I would have loved to put these boxes on the top shelf, but for reasons we won't get into (improper planning, thought and measurement), the shelf with the most vertical space ended up being the bottom one.  And so it goes.

I digress.  We installed three shorter bars, which actually increased my hanging space by about a foot.
On the left hand side, we installed two bars, one towards the ceiling for tops (long and short sleeved), and one lower, for skirts, pants and jackets.

On the opposite wall, the right hand side, where we used to have shelving, there is now one high bar, for long items, primarily dresses.

I even kept the old tie rack, which swing out, and used it to hold my hanging organizers.  One for jewelry, and one for other accessories.

Now all my clothes have their proper space.  My jeans are now in plain sight, so I can remember what I own.  Plus they are off the floor....

My bags have their very own shelf, so I can see them all, and rotate them in and out more frequently.  It's like I just bought a few more purses!

And not only can I keep shoes hanging on the door, but I still have room on the floor for my other shoe rack!

In the process of re-organizing, I also realized how many clothes I own!  Granted, these are both my summer and winter clothes (I don't rotate everything out for the seasons).  But I managed to start a pile for donation, and plan to get rid of a few more things.  But I love the new layout, if you can't tell from the photos, it's actually much more efficient, and much easier to see everything!
